Why go for Via Ferrata? Fun, certainly. Adrenaline, without a doubt. Experiencing something new, why not? But for us, the via ferrata opened routes in the mountains that we wouldn’t have ventured onto without significant climbing experience.

Via ferrata - crossing over a rope bridge

We tried two ferratas. One led through a canyon of a wild mountain river. We crossed rope bridges, held onto the rock, and beneath us roared the rapids of dark blue water.

Hannah tested the via ferrata

We walked in places that can't be reached without getting wet, feeling the power and energy of the water. On a hot summer day, we couldn't have chosen a better activity and route.

The view from the steep wall of the via ferrata

The second via ferrata took us to steep high cliffs, giving us a sense of what it's like to climb on vertical rock. The entire valley stretched out directly beneath us, with the houses in the villages looking like tiny dots.

And what do you need for via ferrata climbing?

For a via ferrata, you will need specialized equipment like a via ferrata harness and a helmet. Ferrata gloves are also useful, providing protection from potential injuries caused by the steel safety cables.

As for clothing, there's no need for anything special. However, it's crucial that the clothing you choose allows a wide range of motion, is durable, and fits comfortably. During the summer, it's best to opt for functional, quick-drying clothing. You can find additional tips and inspiration below the article.

On the via ferrata with gusto, but don't underestimate the equipment

In conclusion, it is important to say that even though via ferratas are secured routes on rock faces and you have all the right equipment, it is definitely not a risk-free activity.

Via ferrata gear will protect you, but the risk of injury, even with a small fall, is high, as falling into a harness is quite harsh. You should at least be certain that heights don't seriously affect you and feel confident in your movements.

It's also crucial to choose an appropriate difficulty level for the route that corresponds to your skills and experience.

Ideally go on a via ferrata with friends, you never know what can happen.
